Copper is the one metal on our sheet where the buyer usually cares more about an electrical number than a mechanical one. A panel builder wants conductivity, an AC contractor wants a tube that brazes cleanly, a utensil maker wants a circle that spins without cracking. Same element, three very different orders.

As a copper supplier in Bangalore, we deal in two qualities: electrolytic copper, which the trade calls E.C. grade, and commercial quality copper for jobs where conductivity is not written into the specification. E.C. grade is where most of our copper enquiries start, and every lot can go out with a test certificate from a Govt. recognised test house.

Electrolytic or commercial: which one is on your drawing?

Electrolytic tough pitch copper (Cu-ETP, UNS C11000) carries at least 99.90 % copper, silver counted as copper, and is made to conduct at 100 % IACS when annealed. It is the default for busbars, earthing conductors, switchgear parts and bare conductor wire. Our page on E.C. grade copper covers the chemistry and the standards behind it.

Commercial quality copper is ordinary copper for mechanical and decorative work, where nobody is going to put a conductivity meter on it: gaskets, spun vessels, ornamental sheet, general fabrication. If the end use is electrical, buy E.C. grade and ask for the conductivity figure on the certificate. The price gap is small next to the cost of a panel that runs hot.

Condition and finish

The same copper behaves very differently depending on how it was last processed. Cold work makes it stiff and strong; annealing makes it soft enough to bend round a tight radius. A plating on top changes how it handles corrosion, solder and heat.

  • Hard drawn copper: cold drawn with no anneal afterwards, for conductors that must hold their shape or carry load
  • Soft annealed copper: heat treated after drawing, for windings, flexible links and anything formed on site
  • Tinned copper: tin coated for solderability and protection in damp or sulphur-laden air
  • Nickel plated copper: nickel coated for higher service temperatures and a harder surface

Forms we handle

Our product sheet lists copper round bars, square and hexagonal bars, flats, strips, sheets, plates, circles and wires, plus pipes and tubes in straight and coil form, both Indian-made and imported. Each form has its own page with sizes, weights and ordering notes, linked below. Each tends to go to a different kind of buyer: busbar flats to panel shops, ACR coils to HVAC contractors, circles to vessel makers and spinners, earthing strip and plate to electrical contractors.

What is the difference between ETP and DHP copper?

ETP copper keeps a small amount of oxygen, around 0.04 %, locked up as copper oxide. That oxygen does no harm to conductivity, but if ETP is heated in a hydrogen-bearing atmosphere, as happens during torch brazing, the hydrogen reacts with the oxide, forms steam inside the metal and can crack it along the grain boundaries.

DHP copper is deoxidised with phosphorus, so there is no oxide for hydrogen to attack. It brazes and welds well, which is why water, gas and refrigeration tubes are DHP. The price you pay is conductivity: the residual phosphorus pulls it down to roughly 85 % IACS. Rule of thumb: ETP for anything that carries current, DHP for anything that carries fluid.

Sending a copper enquiry

A quote turns round faster when the enquiry says grade (E.C. or commercial), form and size, temper, any plating, quantity in kilograms or pieces, and which standard the certificate should refer to. If you only know the application, tell us that. A note like 'busbar for a 630 A LT panel, tinned' or 'ACR coil for split AC installs' is enough to start.

FAQ

Questions about Copper

Still unsure? Call 080-41159995 or WhatsApp +91 98441 25506 and we will answer from the trade desk.

What is commercial quality copper?

It is copper sold for mechanical, decorative or general fabrication work where no electrical conductivity is specified. It is still high-copper material, but the supplier does not guarantee a conductivity figure. For busbars, earthing or any current-carrying part, order E.C. grade copper and ask for the conductivity value on the test certificate.

Why is copper used for electrical conductors?

Among practical engineering metals, copper has the highest conductivity after silver: annealed ETP copper is the 100 % IACS reference, about 58 MS/m. It also solders and bolts easily, resists corrosion in most atmospheres and keeps its strength at panel temperatures. Aluminium is lighter and cheaper but needs a larger section for the same current.

Is copper sold by weight or by length?

In the Indian trade, bars, flats, sheets and wire are almost always priced per kilogram, with the rate following the LME copper price. Cut pieces are weighed and billed. Tubes are often quoted per kilogram too, though ACR coils are also sold by coil length. Ask for both weight and length on the quotation if you are comparing offers.

How can I check whether copper is pure?

A chemical analysis (Cu plus Ag, oxygen, phosphorus and trace elements) and an electrical conductivity test are the reliable checks. Colour, weight and spark tests only rule out obvious brass or plated material. A test certificate from a recognised lab, tied to the heat or lot number on your material, is the practical proof for a purchase file.

Can I get a test certificate with copper supplied by Jubilant Impex?

Yes. Material can be supplied with a test certificate through a Govt. recognised test house, reporting chemical composition and, where needed, conductivity, tensile or hardness. Tell us at enquiry stage which standard and which tests your customer or inspector expects so the certificate covers them.

Does copper need a different grade for brazing?

Yes, if the joint is made with a flame or in a furnace atmosphere containing hydrogen. Phosphorus-deoxidised (DHP) copper is the safe choice there, which is why tubes are made from it. ETP copper can be soldered and bolted without trouble, and can be brazed with care, but prolonged heating in hydrogen can embrittle it.
