Sugar mill tubes and off-season materials for sugar factories and distilleries
Sugar mill tubes are the heat-exchange tubes in juice heaters, evaporators and pans, traditionally drawn in 70/30 brass for its heat transfer and resistance to juice, and increasingly in stainless steel. Mills also buy gun metal or phosphor bronze bushes and IBR boiler tubes. Jubilant Impex in Bangalore supplies sugar mill quality brass pipes and the rest of the list.
In a sugar factory, purchasing happens in a rush. Crushing stops, the plant is opened up, the engineer counts the leaking tubes and worn bushes, and the indent has to be filled before cane arrives again. Material that turns up late is not much use.
This page follows that off-season list, section by section of the factory, and ends in the distillery next door.
Why are brass tubes used in sugar mills?
Juice heaters and evaporator bodies need tubes that move heat quickly from steam or vapour into juice, and that can be rolled tightly into tube plates. Brass does both. It conducts heat several times better than stainless steel, expands well during rolling, and holds up to raw juice and the cleaning cycles between boilings. Most mills order sugar mill quality brass pipes in 70/30, the copper-rich brass that resists dezincification better than leaner brasses.
Tubes are specified by outside diameter, gauge (SWG) and length. Copy the size from the old tube or the heater drawing; do not guess, because tube plate holes leave no room for error.
Brass tubes also scale. Hard calcium and silica scale on the juice side cuts heat transfer quickly, and aggressive descaling with acid or caustic thins the wall over the years. Mills that track tube wall thickness during each off-season can plan partial retubing instead of reacting to leaks mid-season.
Stainless steel in the boiling house
Many mills have moved some evaporator bodies and juice heaters to stainless tube. Stainless costs less per tube, is lighter and resists erosion and acidic cleaning better. The trade-off is lower heat transfer, which designers offset with more tube area. Juice lines, pans, crystallisers and molasses tanks increasingly use 304 sheet and pipe as well.
Mill house: bushes and bearings
Mill rollers turn slowly under very heavy load, in a wet, juicy and dirty environment. Their bearings, known in the trade as 'brasses', are traditionally cast in gun metal or phosphor bronze, which run against steel journals without seizing and tolerate juice and water contamination. We supply both, along with brass rods and bars for smaller bushings and fittings.
Bearing wear shows up as rising temperature and grooved journals. Order the casting blanks early enough for your workshop to bore them before the trial run; a mill brass that arrives the week crushing starts usually goes in unfinished or not at all.

Most Karnataka mills, from Mandya in the south to Belagavi and Bagalkot in the north, burn bagasse in their own boilers and export surplus power. Those boilers are IBR-regulated, so retubing needs IBR-certified tubes with proper documents. SA-179 and BS 3059 tubes, A106 steam pipe and A335 chrome-moly for superheater circuits all come up in a typical shutdown.
The distillery next door
Molasses and cane-juice ethanol plants have grown quickly alongside mills. Fermenters, wash tanks and most column internals are 304 or 316L stainless, chosen for acidic, warm and sometimes chloride-bearing fermentation broth. Potable spirit columns often keep copper sections because copper removes sulphur compounds from the vapour. Condensers may use brass or stainless tubes depending on cooling water quality.
Building the off-season indent
A clear indent gets a faster quote. Split it into heaters and evaporators (tube material, OD, SWG, length, count), mill house (bush alloy and blank size), boiler (IBR tubes and pipes, with standard and grade) and general stores (stainless sheet, pipe, fittings, brass rod). Send the whole list at once rather than in pieces, so we can check every line together and come back with one consolidated quote.

What is sugar mill quality brass tube?
It is seamless drawn brass tube, usually 70/30 copper-zinc, made to the dimensions and tolerances used in sugar factory juice heaters, evaporators and pans. The tube must expand cleanly into tube plates without splitting and resist juice and cleaning chemicals. It is sold by outside diameter, SWG and length.
Can stainless steel replace brass tubes in a juice heater?
Yes, and many mills have done it. Stainless tubes are cheaper per piece, lighter and resist erosion and chemical cleaning well. Their heat transfer is lower, so a heater designed for brass may lose some performance unless tube area is increased. Check with the equipment maker before changing material in an existing heater.
Which material is used for sugar mill roller bearings?
Sugar mill roller bearings, often called mill brasses, are traditionally made of gun metal or phosphor bronze. These copper-tin alloys carry heavy loads at slow speed, resist wear and do not seize against steel journals even when juice and water get into the bearing. They are bored and grooved to suit the journal.
What material are distillery fermenters made of?
Modern distillery fermenters are usually 304 or 316L stainless steel. Fermentation broth is warm and acidic, and in molasses-based plants can carry chlorides, so 316L is preferred where the budget allows. Older plants used mild steel with epoxy linings, which need regular inspection and repair.
Do sugar mill boilers need IBR tubes?
Yes. Bagasse-fired boilers in sugar mills operate as steam boilers under the Indian Boiler Regulations, so tubes and pipes in their pressure parts must be IBR-certified and accompanied by the prescribed documents. Without them, the boiler inspector will not approve the repair or allow the boiler to be fired.
