Construction steel and metals for buildings, plants and infrastructure

Construction projects use mild steel angles, channels, beams and plates to IS 2062 for structures, chequered plate for floors and stairs, galvanised and corrugated sheet for roofing, stainless steel for railings and facades, and copper for earthing and lightning protection. Jubilant Impex in Bangalore supplies this construction steel and the non-ferrous metals that go with it.

Most of the steel in a building is rebar, and we do not deal in rebar. What we supply is everything a fabricator or contractor needs after the concrete: the steel structure for a shed or mezzanine, the stairs and platforms, the roof, the railings, and the earthing system nobody sees until the lightning arrives.

This page walks through a typical industrial or commercial build from the frame to the roof.

The frame: structural sections and plates

Industrial sheds, mezzanines, pipe racks, canopies and equipment supports are built from mild steel angles, channels, beams, flats and plates. In India these are normally specified to IS 2062, with E250 the everyday grade for general structural work and higher grades where the designer needs more strength. Our angles, channels and sections and plates cover the common sizes; tell us the section designation and length and we will confirm what is available.

For boiler foundations, tanks and other parts where the steel sees heat or pressure, boiler quality (B.Q.) plates are a separate product with their own certification.

Steel that will be galvanised after fabrication should be ordered with that in mind. Silicon and phosphorus in the steel affect how thick and how grey the zinc coating grows, so mention galvanising on the enquiry and check the chemistry on the certificate.

Floors, stairs and platforms

Chequered plate gives a raised pattern that stops boots slipping, which is why it is used for stair treads, walkways, trench covers, loading platforms and vehicle ramps. Mild steel chequered plate is the default for heavy traffic. Aluminium chequered plate weighs about a third as much and does not rust, so it suits mezzanines, vehicle bodies, cleanrooms and coastal sites.

Roofing and cladding

Galvanised plain and corrugated sheet covers sheds, site offices, hoardings and temporary works. The zinc coating protects the steel by acting as a barrier and, where it is scratched, by corroding sacrificially first. Aluminium sheet is used for cladding, flashing and insulation jacketing on pipes and ducts.

Roof sheets fail at the fixings and the overlaps first. Use the right sealing washers and keep cut edges painted, especially on coastal or chemical-plant roofs, where the zinc layer is used up faster than inland.

Railings, facades and visible steel

Stainless steel handrails, balustrades and canopy fittings in offices, malls and hospitals are mostly 304. Near the coast, or around swimming pools where chlorine is in the air, use 316, because 304 will stain brown. Our stainless sheets and sections and ERW pipe cover most railing and cladding work.

Earthing, lightning protection and shielding

Every building needs an earthing system and many need lightning protection. Copper strips, rods and plates are used for both, sized under IS 3043 for earthing and IS/IEC 62305 for lightning protection. Copper costs more than galvanised steel, but it lasts far longer in soil and keeps its conductivity.

Hospital X-ray and CT rooms need radiation shielding, traditionally lead sheet in walls and doors. We supply lead; sheet thickness should come from the radiation safety design for the room.

Zinc for hot-dip galvanising

Transmission towers, street furniture, crash barriers and cable trays are hot-dip galvanised after fabrication, usually to IS 4759 or IS 2629 practice. Galvanisers buy zinc ingot by the tonne for their kettles. That is a trade sale rather than a contractor's purchase, but it is all part of the same construction supply chain.

FAQ

Questions about Construction & Infrastructure

Still unsure? Call 080-41159995 or WhatsApp +91 98441 25506 and we will answer from the trade desk.

What is IS 2062 steel?

IS 2062 is the Indian standard for hot-rolled medium and high tensile structural steel, covering plates, strips, sections, flats and bars. Grades are named by yield strength, such as E250, E350 and E410, with sub-qualities A, BR, B0 and C based on impact testing. E250 is the common grade for general fabrication.

What is chequered plate used for?

Chequered plate has a raised diamond or lentil pattern rolled into one surface to give grip underfoot. It is used for stair treads, walkways, platforms, trench and drain covers, vehicle floors and loading ramps. Mild steel chequered plate is used for heavy-duty floors; aluminium chequered plate where weight or rust is a concern.

Which stainless steel is used for railings?

304 stainless steel is the usual grade for indoor and inland outdoor railings, offering good corrosion resistance and an easy polish. In coastal areas, near swimming pools, or where de-icing salts are used, 316 is recommended because its molybdenum content resists chloride pitting and the brown tea staining that 304 suffers.

Is copper or GI better for earthing?

Copper has lower resistance and a much longer life in most soils, so it needs less maintenance and stays effective for years. Galvanised iron is cheaper and acceptable in less critical installations, but its zinc coating corrodes away, after which the steel rusts quickly. For panels, transformers, data centres and lightning protection, copper is usually specified.

What is the difference between GI and GP sheet?

Both are zinc-coated steel. GP (galvanised plain) usually refers to flat sheet or coil, while GI is a broader trade term that includes corrugated roofing sheet. In practice the material is the same continuous-galvanised steel, and the zinc coating mass, such as 120 or 275 g/m², matters more than the name.
